Aries,
the first sign of the twelve zodiac signs, is steeped in history and mythology dating back thousands of years. It is a fire sign represented by the ram, denoting the first astrological year and having a place within the spring equinox, a factor that symbolises new beginnings and renewal of life.
The constellation Aries' first record can be traced back to ancient times.
It was known by the Babylonian astronomers as early as the 7th century BCE, where it was identified with either "The Hired Man" or "The Agrarian Worker." It was in Greek mythology, however, that Aries got its most famous association with the golden-fleeced ram.
According to Greek legend, its roots can be traced back to the story of Boeotia. King Athamas of Boeotia had married Nephele, a cloud nymph, by whom he had two children: Phrixus and Helle. After Athamas abandoned Nephele for Ino, the jealous new queen devised a plot to kill the children. Nephele intervened and sent a magical golden-fleeced ram to rescue them. As they flew to safety on his back, Helle fell into the sea—then, posthumously, titled the Hellespont—and Phrixus survived the journey to Colchis. In turn, Phrixus sacrificed the ram to Zeus and gave its golden fleece to King Aeëtes. It would be this fleece that Jason and the Argonauts would later quest for along their lengthy journey.
This myth is what gives origin to the cardinal qualities associated with Aries of the zodiac. It is a sign ruled by Mars, the planet of war and passion, thereby, it represents leadership, initiative, and fearlessness, much like the protagonist of it's lore: Phrixus, and his unwavering spirit in the face of survival and danger, alongside the loss of his sister, Helle.
Aside from the green origin to this astrological sign, however, it has many other associations in different cultures. In Egyptian mythology, it was associated with the god Amon-Ra, often drawn with ram's horns. To the Persians, it represented the god of light and truth.
The symbol of Aries, formed by the ram's horns, has been used for centuries. It can be seen in the same iterations in very old Greek writing and has hardly changed at all in Western astrology.
Those born under Aries, then, are known for their pioneering spirit and eternal cyclic renewal that represents their central character trait of never backing down in front of any hurdle and having the courage to take on new beginnings, no matter where they may start from or what they may have been pushed up again.
